ProcessIT Innovations Annual Report

ProcessIT Annual Report 2016

Background

The large process- and manufacturing industries in the region are strong and established on their respective world markets. To maintain and further strengthen their positions there is a need for constants development. ProcessIT Innovations is based on the collective strength and experience of the Norrbotten and Västerbotten region.

The region has excellent and partly unique conditions for developing an effective innovation system. The collective efforts in this area will result in a clear growth, based on solutions such as new technical products and services leading to increased competitiveness for the process industry in the region. These technical solutions will also help improve facilities nationally and internationally.

Information technology is vital for the industry

Sweden and the region has reached a world leading position in IT especially with wireless technology and applications but also general usage of IT-based services. The information technology has also strengthened the traditional industries positions on the market and will be a very important part of the industry in the future. Maintaining such a position requires constant maintenance and further development.

InternetBay, the process- and manufacturing industry in the region compete on a global market with constant focus on effectiveness and quality with demands for customized orders which causes shorter production series and more frequent changes in the production line. The main competitive resources of the region are raw material (ore, forest and water), qualified personnel and advanced facilities. The market requires that the region maintains an advanced position in development and usage of new technology to be able to offer the customers new and improved high quality products and services.

Extensive needs inventory

The needs inventory and prioritising made by InternetBay 2001/2002 identified both common short-term and long-term needs for several companies. The first needs inventory that was conducted at more than 20 of the regions process- and manufacturing companies is today an ongoing process and has resulted in over 100 identified applications. ProcessIT is an automated treatment of process-, production- and product information and includes modelling, measurement technology, automated processes, signal processing and information transfer technology. Many of the short-term needs have been transformed to commercial projects but to realize the long-term needs an innovation system was needed. ProcessIT Innovations was started 2002 for this reason to support research projects for the process- and manufacturing industry.

The web site ProcessIT Innovations summarizes how the process-, manufacturing- and ICT industry together with the universities collaborate through ProcessIT Innovations to create a needs based and professional framework for developing existing and new companies in the region. The credibility of ProcessIT Innovations lies in its work method, needs based development with new forms of collaboration – which has already generated good results.
